what's new?

here's another piece of ancient history (circa 2003).
i almost took a picture today...
but then i ate some cookies instead

 i just want to go have fun for a few days.
or maybe
i need to get away from the trauma of setting up a
new computer.

so.......
this is a polaroid negative that i scanned 2 years ago
(on the old mac and the old scanner).

as some of you know i have been freaking-out because i can't use my photoshop 7 on the new mac.
well this image is brought to you by iphoto 8.
not bad right?

i probably put it in photoshop when i scanned it originally. but i didn't do much cuz it was full of dust bunnies. in iphoto8  i did a little cantrast adjustment ,sharpened just a tad and another tad of noise -reduction.

so instead of freaking out about photoshop... i'm now going to freak-out about buying a new scanner.
because of course the old but reliable HP will not work on the new mac.

so far my choices seem to be the canoscan 9950F or HP scanjet professional image scanner.
has anybody used one of these?
any suggestions?

lately all my activities seem to be UN-related to photography...
i think i was 3 yrs old when i took this shot....which was a very long time ago.
time to make some changes.

i found this in the garden while planting creeping jenny.
steve says our house must be have been built over an ancient indian burial ground.

i used to live in pennsylvania.
this tree lives in a nice little forest near my old house.

i used to walk thru these woods all the time... i miss this tree.

i don't know how or when it lost its leg ....

this last shot is with the linhof and probably from 1999 or 2000.
the other photos are all shot with holga in 2004-06.

in 1995 we met a couple at a youth hostel in seguret.
they were from belgium and loved  a bottle (or two) of bordeaux.
he told us that the top of mt ventoux looks like the moon.
she had had a miscarriage the month before.
that's all i remember about them.
but  partly because of them steve rode his bike to the top of mt ventoux...
...3 times that summer

in the year 2000 steve rode to the top again.
with food and water breaks it takes him  a couple of hours...

it took me 45 minutes to  drive ...a car... to the top.
since i had the car i brought the linhof and shot some ilford (see above).

this year steve rode to the top again!! (that's #5 if you're counting)
i had no car (we only had our bikes) and so and i photographed with miss holga ...
...from all the beautiful valleys below.

continued from yesterday.......

i think i went a little crazy here.
i stood on the side of the hill--- the side--not flat footed
the back two legs of the tripod were fully extended--but not the front leg.
i could barely see the ground glass.
i think i even attempted to drag over a giant rock to stand on...
i struggled with the exposure.
that bright wall in the back ground thru everything off.
and there is definitely some vignetting in the upper right from the extreme front rise.
phew
i wanted this picture bad.
when i tried to print it....i'm sorry
i can't talk about it anymore.
i think i hate it.

Seguret, France   2000
A dog named Pomme was our friend when we stayed in this town the 1st time.  He was a Brittany Spaniel who woke us up every morning by coming into our room via the window.  He belonged to the owner of the youth hostel and followed us in to town every night.  We would go to the cafe and have a glass of wine. Pomme went to the cafe and hung out with a giant (I mean big) poodle! We always got back home before Pomme.

This time I planned it .  Parked, went inside and let my eyes adjust.  Set up and even calculated the reciprocity failure!! I think the exposure was 11 minutes.

... by the way st. roch is the guy who helped (healed) the sick...like victims of the bubonic plague....he got sick too and was helped by a dog... there ya go.

The River Gard, Collias, France  2000
I didn't even have the linhof out of the back pack. The tripod was slung over my shoulder as I looked  down at the beach from the bridge.  They were unfolding
It was a 4x5 snap shot!
One of the guys ran up to me on the bridge.  He said he was a film student at the University at Nimes.  He was filming his movie "The Paper Boat" something... oh! ... it's a paper boat!................ohmygodohmygodhurryhurryhurry.... get the back pack off my back, unzip, pull out the camera, put it on the tripod, grab a lens, point, tilt, focus, get some film in there...pull out the dark slide hurryhurryhurry...they're out in the water now!...CLICK  .... ohmygod they're going under the bridge... run over to the other side... where are they?... run back... oh... they're taking in water... oh well that's it.

It started to rain and I took cover inside this church.  When my eyes adjusted to the light I could see that I needed to set up the linhof.  It was so dark I could barely see thru the ground glass to compose and the exposure was several minutes.

I drove by this place a million times and never had my camera. Finally I actually planned to go shoot it.  Couldn't even find it first.
The next summer it was completely collapsed.

I was wandering around loaded down by my linhof field camera, a backpack and a tripod All this gear weighs more than I do and these guys probably thought I was a bit strange. They all were waving and smiling (probably laughing) at me and someone asked me to take their picture.  I exchanged addresses with the guy on the far left and sent him 6 copies of this photo.  A few months later at Christmas (2000) I recieved a giant box of chocolates!!!

It really was just the best day!!!!
The mac is back, I can scan negs and...best of all...
The Prize arrived!!
(remember the contest at plasticfantastic?  April 19th...here is the link PLASTICFANTASTIC )

And here's the prize!  Not only is it charming but useful too... for all those mini hot dogs or maybe those little pickles.  The possibilities are endless!  And it made it to America with out a scratch ...all the way from that place everyone keeps calling the UK.
wherever that is!

I must thank everyone who supported me during these trying times... you pulled me thru... you know who you are.  Every one was so helpful... Especially all the running to the market to pick up apples and now pickles!

When I was a little girl it was still fashionable for women to wear gloves. Mom wore gloves often and so... of course I had to wear gloves.  Mom doesn't wear gloves these days (she is to cool for that) but I still try to imitate all her best qualities.   Happy mother's day to my Mom and all the moms that I know!
