it just so happens that i was born in a RAT year (on leap year too!)

wikipedia says that  being born in a rat year makes me:

and also:
controlling-obstinate-manipulative-cruel-critical-stingy-bossy-fickle

but what happens when you mix a rat with a leap year baby?

they were facing a shrine
that had 2 statues of a couple of people who looked like royalty.
ya know lots of velvet and gold with painted on gem stones,
bunch of candles lit and unlit, dead flowers, plastic flowers.

most of the churches we saw in france were open all day.
it was always cool to go inside. they were "historically significant" buildings...
but maybe more importantly they were dark and about 75 degrees cooler inside.
rest your eyes, rest your sweat glands, just take a break.
but this church was locked...

it was a great little town but the boulangerie was closed on wednesday...
..... the cafe was open and that is were we rehydrated.
a lot of the towns we visited were so small that they only had one shop: a boulangerie which not only made bread but also had all kinds of little provisions like water, juice.. ..things you want after a long bike ride.

would i yell at him(in very poor french: descendez!!! descendez!!!)...
or join him...since it became obvious while i pondered my options
that it was a game and he was enjoying himself completely.

We are leaving France today September 7.....

(14 yrs ago) In order to get the bikes back home we needed to be at Charles De Gualle airport early so we stayed in this space ship-type hotel or is it a steam ship? ... very boring.  but whose complaining....We will be home soon!!! Have you followed along?

We didn't plan on staying in this town.
But we had a terrible flat tire (not a quick-fix-flat) and it started raining. We had no choice. The room was on the 3rd floor of a corner building where the 1st floor was sort of like an american bar...

Hey I think it's Labor Day weekend!! Have a good one!

One day while Steve was out riding his bike the old man that ran this hotel knocked on our door. He had a yellow rose from his beautiful garden. I took the rose, said "merci"  and closed the door.
It was sweet but maybe a little creepy too.

The owner of this tiny hotel had several cats.
During the day she kept the cats outside on the balcony right above our room. They cried incessantly.  It  pissed me off for  many reasons. (cruelty.. annoying...)  I just remember leaning over our balcony and craning my neck upward trying to see how many cats she actually had. By the sounds of the  mewing there were many...and I think she used leashes. Not a typical French scene.

The proprietor of this hotel met us in the tiny lobby one day and motioned for us to come outside. There he pointed up at our window (this window) that was of course full of laundry and facing the street.
He  said to us "this is not possible in  France"

When Granddad died last year he was 97.  Among the many other things we found there was this perfectly pressed Navy work shirt, straight pins from the cleaners still in place.  It has been folded and tucked away safely and purposefully since 1945, I guess.
